Our Initiative: Burundi English School (BES)

TAAS strengthens our primary initiative, Burundi English School, with teacher mentorship, safe classrooms, learning materials, and bursaries.

Methodology

A close-up, photographic image of a stack of colorful exercise books, sharpened pencils, and a well-used English dictionary resting on a smooth wooden desk in a Burundian classroom. The covers of the books show slight wear at the edges, suggesting frequent use, while the pencils are neatly aligned, their graphite tips catching soft, diffused daylight from a nearby window. In the blurred background, a chalkboard with English sentences and a map of Africa can be seen. Captured from a slightly elevated angle with shallow depth of field, the mood is focused and studious, conveying the tangible impact of school supplies and educational support.

Using the Alberta curriculum and the Pearson Edexcel Program, we partner with BES teachers, offering regular mentorship, workshops, and resources that build strong classroom practice and leadership capacity.

A warmly painted classroom interior in Bujumbura, Burundi, viewed in photographic realism, with rows of well-used wooden desks and neatly stacked exercise books labeled in English and French. A sturdy chalkboard spans the front wall, covered with carefully written English vocabulary and math problems in white chalk. Sunlight pours through open louvered windows, casting soft, angled beams across the red cement floor and creating gentle shadows under each desk. In the back corner, shelves hold worn but organized textbooks, globes, and simple science materials. Shot at eye level with a moderate depth of field, the composition feels calm, hopeful, and professional, emphasizing the dignity of the learning environment supported by the non-profit.

Donor gifts fund safe school buildings, essential equipment, textbooks, and bursaries, removing barriers so children in Bujumbura can continue learning.

Why Do We Support English Education in Burundi?

In Bujumbura, many families cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or basic supplies, and classrooms are often overcrowded and under-resourced. By supporting Burundi English School, TAAS helps create a stable, well-equipped learning environment where trained teachers can focus on students, not shortages. Together, we reduce inequities and open doors to future work, higher education, and community leadership.
